Choosing the Right Thread for Your Canvas

One of the most common questions we get at the shop is: what thread should I use for this canvas? The honest answer is that there's rarely one right choice - but there are a lot of wrong ones. Fiber choice shapes texture, sheen, coverage, and even how long your project will last as a finished piece.

For beginners, we usually start with a wool like Bella Lusso or Planet Earth. Wool is forgiving, covers well on 13-mesh canvas, and lays flat without a lot of fuss. If you're stitching a pillow or an ornament that's going to see real life - kids, pets, holiday storage - wool is the workhorse.

Silk is a different world. Vineyard Silk and Silk & Ivory glow in a way wool can't, especially under lamp light. We reach for silk when a canvas has florals, faces, or focal areas that deserve a highlight. It's not harder to stitch - just less forgiving of tension mistakes.

Cotton (think DMC or Presencia) has its place too, particularly for painted areas that need a matte, chalky finish. And blends like Silk & Ivory give you the best of both worlds: the sheen of silk with the coverage of wool.
