Planet Earth vs. Vineyard Silk: A Side-By-Side

We get asked at least once a day: Planet Earth or Vineyard Silk? Both are 6-ply, both come in absurdly good color ranges, both hit that sweet spot of premium-but-usable. The differences show up in the stitching.

Planet Earth is a merino wool. It's springy, forgiving, and covers 13-mesh canvas beautifully with all six plies. It has a soft, matte hand and lays down without much fuss. If your canvas is going to be a pillow or an ornament that gets touched, wool wins.

Vineyard Silk is a spun silk. It has real luster, the kind that catches lamp light and makes a canvas look painted. It's a little slippery on the needle at first, and it rewards a laying tool, but the finished piece glows in a way wool simply can't.

Our rule of thumb: wool for backgrounds and workhorse areas, silk for the focal point. A pear rendered in wool is a pear. A pear rendered in silk is a portrait of a pear.
